About This Course

This instructor-led course gives a practical, implementation-focused grounding in double materiality and risk assessment. Participants learn to identify and assess Impacts, Risks and Opportunities (IROs), run stakeholder and value chain assessments, evaluate climate-related financial risks, and build assurance-ready reporting processes aligned with EU CSRD/ESRS, UK SRS (IFRS S1/S2-aligned), and FCA SDR requirements.

Module 1: Foundations of Double Materiality & Regulatory Landscapes

  • Materiality Evolution: from voluntary disclosure to mandatory EU CSRD/ESRS and UK SRS/SDR, including EU Omnibus developments
  • Dual Perspective Dynamics: Impact vs. Financial materiality
  • ESRS Architecture: cross-cutting standards ESRS 1 and ESRS 2
  • Global Interoperability: alignment across IFRS, GRI/ISSB
  • UK Frameworks: UK SRS S1 & S2 requirements for UK-listed entities

Module 2: Stakeholder Mapping & Value Chain Architecture

  • EFRAG Stakeholder Groups: Affected Stakeholders vs. Users of Sustainability Statements
  • Value Chain Architecture: tier-1 suppliers, downstream distribution, product lifecycles
  • Engagement Mechanisms: consultation matrices, expert panels, managing survey fatigue
  • Data Gap Strategies: proxy data and sector benchmarks for value chain blind spots

Module 3: Executing Double Materiality Assessment

  • Topical Universe Screening: environmental (E1–E5) and social (S1–S4) standards
  • Negative Impact Scoring: severity (scale, scope, irremediability) and likelihood
  • Positive Impact Scoring: scale and scope of sustainability contributions
  • Threshold Setting: defensible cut-off criteria for material topics

Module 4: Sustainability Risk & Opportunity Assessment

  • Financial Transmission: stranded assets, compliance penalties, cash flow volatility
  • Climate Resilience: linking climate exposure to operational and financial performance
  • ERM Risk Matrices: magnitude and probability across short/medium/long-term horizons
  • UK SRS 2 / IFRS S2 Modeling: physical and transition climate risk assessment
  • Opportunity Capture: resource efficiency, green finance access, market differentiation

Module 5: Synthesis, Threshold Integration & Assurance Readiness

  • Double Materiality Registry: consolidating one-sided and dual-material topics
  • Datapoint Mapping: linking material topics to ESRS and UK SRS disclosure requirements
  • Governance Statement: structuring the Materiality Assessment Methodology for annual reporting
  • Assurance Readiness: auditable data trails and sign-off workflows for Limited Assurance

Module 6: Case Study Analysis & Capstone Simulation

  • Report Benchmarking: critiquing published CSRD and UK FTSE-100 disclosures
  • Capstone Simulation: live IRO scoring exercise using a multinational case study
  • Executive Presentation: simulating a Board Steering Committee sign-off
